CNN —Aya Nakamura was born in the former French colony of Mali, raised in France and is widely considered the most streamed female Francophone artist in the world. However, ahead of Paris 2024, Nakamura finds herself at the center of France’s culture wars. Aya Nakamura attends the Kenzo Menswear Fall-Winter 2023-2024 show as part of Paris Fashion Week on January 20, 2023 in Paris, France. “I think that the people who criticize her actually don’t accept that she embodies France,” French activist Rokhaya Diallo told CNN. Politicians such as Le Pen hailed the legislation as an “ideological victory” whilst French health Minister, Aurelien Rousseau resigned in protest.

In four months, France will host the Paris Olympics, but which France will show up? Torn between tradition and modernity, the country is in the midst of an identity crisis. Right-wing critics say Ms. Nakamura’s music does not represent France, and the prospect of her performing has led to a barrage of racist insults online against her. The outcry has compounded a fight over an official poster unveiled this month: a pastel rendering of the city’s landmarks thronging with people in a busy style reminiscent of the “Where’s Waldo?” children’s books. An opinion essay in the right-wing Journal du Dimanche said “the malaise of a nation in the throes of deconstruction” was in full view.

REUTERS/Benoit TessierPARIS, March 2 (Reuters) - Givenchy creative director Matthew M. Williams focused on dresses at the French fashion house’s fall runway show at Paris Fashion Week on Thursday, sending out a line-up of long, slinky gowns that swept the runway. Layered looks were less present than in previous seasons, though there were a few, mixing brown shearling and slick, black leather. While the models marched to a solemn, electronic beat in a temporary tent at the Ecole Militaire in central Paris, some of the guests were more flamboyant. The show took place on the fourth day of Paris Fashion week, which runs through March 7, and features big name labels including Dior, Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton Hermes and Chanel.
